On a clear day zoom up to Lions Bay (half way between Vancouver and Squamish) for a superb half-day hike up to one of the best views of Howe Sound.
The 11 kilometre trail is available year-round however it is best to carry spikes/small crampons from November through March as there are two log bridges that tend to freeze and accumulate slippery ice.
A traditional way to reach the summit starts right down at the base of the Sound adjacent to the Sea to Sky Highway, however in recent years a thirty minute parking restriction has made this impossible. Now hikers normally start at the Sunset Park or Magnesia Creek trailhead inside Lions Bay itself. Due to the popularity of this hike we suggest utilising paid overflow parking throughout Lions Bay to prevent disturbing residents. There are generally bays available at the elementary school which also means you will have to include an additional 20 minutes of walking into your calculations.
At the peak there is a huge exposed rocky outcrop with 270 degree views right across to Vancouver Island. Pack some snacks and water as you will want to enjoy time up here. If you have an SLR there are great opportunities for photographing birds of prey.
