Top of the Stawamus Chief

Views for days!

You've got to try the Stawamus Chief hike during your Vancouver Gap Year. Looking out over the Fjord adjacent to the town of Squamish is an inspiring experience.

Due to the popularity of the hike BC parks has recently introduced free day use passes to help curb the environmental impact. Expect this 5-7km trail to take around half a day. You ascend through a well-maintained series of steps past the three rocky chief bouldering hills. The hike is not for the faint hearted with plenty of steep edges and occasional chains/ropes between the first and second chief. There are a lot of smaller shortcut trails but beware as some of these can be relatively risky.

The area is only one hour from the city and dog friendly (on leash). Rock climbers will find opportunities to scale the granite outcrops. The best photos can be found around the first and second chiefs. If you can go during the week it will be a much less crowded experience.
