Top 5 ice cream places

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

A highly controversial and bitterly contested topic! I'm an ice cream lover and suggest the following places to grab your fix when you are in Vancouver. Each is unique, has a different offering and worthwhile visiting.

  • Earnest Ice Cream: three locations across the city with a decent range of regular flavours alongside vegan options. All outlets have waste-minimising policies and the product is super creamy. They do donut combinations and also have large takeaway tubs. London fog is my pick of the bunch. All the flavours here.

  • Mister Artisan Ice Cream: is all about the spectacle! Staff mix crazy amounts of dry ice to make your perfect ice cream and then use a blow torch apparatus to perfect final crunchy roastings on homemade s'more ice cream sandwiches. In bustling Yaletown, can get busy. Weblink.

  • La Casa Gelato: not for the indecisive. Traditional gelato born from an Italian restaurant. This shop has more than 588 different flavours but only room for 238 at any time. Staff are patient despite the high number of samples requested. Is perfectly matched with a visit to the Parker St Studios.

  • La Glace is an adorable French-inspired ice cream shop in Arbutus Ridge made from scratch with a cream anglaise base. Wonderful daily and monthly menu and 500ml takeaway containers if you want to bring home to share the goodness with other.

  • Rain or Shine which has handmade waffle cones in three locations. Creamy and sweet but not quite as enjoyable for me as the first three options.

Not quite part of the top 5 but notable mention must go to Hello Sweets in Chinatown who make a mad selection of marshmallow ice cream sandwiches.

Best novelty soft serve cones can be found at Perverted on Thurlow Street in downtown.
