Summer hiking bliss in Garibaldi

Updated: May 17, 2020

The summer hiking season is the reason so many people take vacation from work in July! The Garibaldi Provincial Park is a little over an hour and a half drive from Vancouver with some of the most epic hikes around. This 1,950 square kilometre wilderness is an outdoor enthusiast's playground.

Expect heavy traffic on the popular seasonally-limited trails, setting out early around 7-8am is recommended to make the most of the cooler morning weather. Be sure to bring multiple layers including rain protection as the weather frequently changes. Don't forget to bring water, sturdy boots, a fully-charged phone to double as a torch and plenty of minimally odoured food. Take all your rubbish off the mountain to avoid interfering with the feeding habits of local bears. There's plenty of wildlife to observe from shady spots along popular hikes.

As you ascend into the alpine regions you will need a hat for shade and an outer layer for wind protection. Car pooling is a great idea as parking can be limited. If you don't have a car it shouldn't be a problem to take an evo or modo as you probably wont exceed the 250 kilometre daily limit.

Ask locals for recommendations but the top three scenic and incredibly challenging options include:

  • Panorama ridge: meadows of blooming flowers, views of Mt Price & Garibaldi. 30km, 11 hours, 1500m elevation gain, best done overnight.

  • Black tusk: a most spectacular black jagged edged mountain. 29km, 11 hours, 1740m elevation gain.

  • Wedgemount lake: beautiful blue lake surrounded by glaciers. 12km, 7 hours, 1100m elevation gain.

Other great trails are listed here.
