Snowshoe Hollyburn Mountain

Updated: May 19, 2021

Stunning views and a serious workout, if you are going to do a local snowshoe adventure then Mount Hollyburn is the best accessible choice.

Snow tends to hang around the peaks of Cypress Provincial Park well into May, giving you plenty of sun-filled days to rent snowshoes and head on up. The drive is only thirty minutes from downtown and if you are using a carshare platform (Evo/Modo) then budget about five hours from door-to-door.

It is good to go when the cross country skiing season is officially closed as you will save the entry fee. In 2021 a parking levy was introduced at the Nordic Carpark where your journey will begin here. After you've unpacked head up the northwestern edge of the ski boundary towards the upper warming hut/fourth lake then continue to the upper limits trail. From here you can clearly see the steep incline towards Mount Hollyburn. My app stats for the snowshoe were: vertical gain of 1012m, 6.2km total distance with a maximum incline of around 27 degrees taking three hours. Bring snacks, glasses, suncream and water. The panoramic views of the city, Mount Baker and ski area are great for the gram.

Plenty of companies rent snowshoes in Vancouver at around $20-$40 per day making this an affordable and highly recommended activity to try during your time in Canada. If you want a more powdery insublime experience then a guided snowshoeing session through Cypress resorts in the depths of winter is an alternative.

More info on the trail here.
