North Vancouver's fantastic renewal project The Shipyards District is host to the largest outdoor skating rink in the lower mainland. Over the winter months you can ski to wonderful unobstructed views of the city and north shore mountains.
You can join free if you bring your own skates, otherwise there are rentals with complementary helmets and skating aids. If you are coming with kids there's an upstairs viewing deck and plenty of rink-side benches with thoughtful storage underneath.
This is an unsupervised rink and helmets are mandatory, it can get pretty busy at peak times but is a lot of fun. If skating is not your thing you will find a heaps of nearby hospitality options alongside the Museum of North Vancouver (MONOVA) which has interesting exhibitions. The area used to be home to over one kilometre of dry docks and historic shipyards and there's a flurry of breweries and distilleries popping up too.
In the evenings over December and January you will also find a warming hut serving hot cider.
