Stamp River salmon migration

John

Updated: May 16, 2020

A dream of mine was to see wild Salmon jumping upstream. In late September/early October the Stamp River Provincial Park near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island is a top vantage point to see the annual migration.

You can access the car park via an unsealed road suitable for all vehicles. The beautiful early Autumn trees contrast nicely with the fast flowing river. A gentle walk takes you to some artificial 'salmon steps' created to assist the fish in making their journey. Standing on the metal walkway you can get a close up view right over the top of them swimming upstream. A little further down the river you can see them hurling themselves up a waterfall. Get the slow motion video out to capture incredible photos.
