Osoyoos & Oliver: rattlesnakes, Nk’Mip desert & berries

Updated: May 17, 2020

When I discovered there was a dry desert in Canada I was dumbfounded. On the border of Washington State in the rain shadow of the rocky mountains this dry sage-brush desert landscape is a unique ecosystem. The Nk'Mip Desert Heritage Centre is a fantastic visitor experience with regular education shows. You can also do an early morning abseiling journey. There are over seven hundred protected Western Rattlesnakes and Great Basin Gopher snakes in the park and your entry fee allows you to explore short walks into the natural desert flora.

The on-site Spirit Ridge resort is a luxury desert escape with rooms overlooking the landscape. Osoyoos has plenty of other nearby lakeside activities and you can get a birds eye view of the region from the mountain lookout.

If you are in the region July and August the small agricultural town of Oliver is a fifteen minute drive away. Behind the bright skies and gentle mountains are a bunch of local farms offering roadside fruit stands or berry foraging. The prices are crazy cheap during peak season and worth bringing a few kilograms home. You can pay per hour for unlimited berry picking or buy punnets without having to get your hands dirty.
