Giant Fir Trees at the Capilano River

John

Twenty minutes from downtown in the Capilano River Regional Park are a crop of majestic 800 year old Douglas Fir trees. Spend a few hours walking the easy 2.5km return trail loops between the salmon hatchery and Cleveland Dam and you will be inspired by the height and girth of these old growth giants. This is one of Vancouver's great entirely free activities that can be done year round. This is a dog friendly activity too.

Parking here (off Capilano Park Road) you will traverse the bridge and then take the Giant Fir trail to the West Service Road. There are a number of original trees with heights of greater than sixty metres and diameters of nearly three metres. Unfortunately at the end of 2020 one of the five hundred year old trees fell due to natural causes.

There are great viewpoints towards the dam wall and Capilano Canyon. You can continue up to the top of the damn where there is an excellent picnic area with bbqs and restrooms.
