Cycle to UBC & explore Pacific Spirit Regional Park

Updated: May 13, 2021

March is a tough month in Vancouver. When the ski fields can be icy or slushy, it isn't warm enough to hit the beach and most hikes are still closed. If you find a sunny day and want to get outside, a ride to the Pacific Spirit Regional Park is the best option, although the park technically might not be open until April 1st.

If you don't own a bike they can be rented from multiple locations downtown clustered on Denman Street and around Pacific Street. Be sure to wear a helmet and lock your bike as theft is commonplace.

You do need a base level of fitness to make the roughly twenty five kilometre round trip. Check out route options based on your final destination via google maps remembering that there is a significant hill on the way there. You will feel much better zooming home with the one hundred metre elevation descent.

There is a network of fifty kilometres of walking trails in the park itself accessed adjacent to Camosun Park. The Regional Park was established in the late 1980s and is a splendid natural forest very close to the city. There are plenty of cycling paths, some of which are best on a mountain bike throughout the park. Locals tend to frequent the park before or after work, if you go during the day it will be less trafficked.

If you prefer to stick by the coast all-season walks are available behind the Museum of Anthropology near the entrance to Wreck Beach. Be sure to bring a picnic lunch as food options are limited nearby.
