Bowen Island

John

Bowen Island is a short twenty minute hop over on a ferry or water taxi from Horseshoe Bay. It is a tremendous half day trip worth doing. The island hosts a wide range of activities including hiking, family-friendly fun, swimming, canoeing and an open pub lawn. It is a great place to take visitors with perfect photos of the snow capped local mountains soaring above Howe Sound.

There is a small local residential population and a heavy tourist presence in summer. For an initial orientation pop past the visitors centre upon your arrival at the Ferry terminal in Snug Cove. You can drive your private vehicle to the island however given the local bus routes and delays loading vehicles onto the ferry I think it is more peaceful to travel over as a pedestrian.

After a day of hiking, canoeing in Killarney Lake or hiking Mount Gardner you can reward yourself with an ice cream from the Union Steamship Marina Resort. If you've got a bit more time there's also a distillery for organic cocktails and spirits, tapas and wine bar and beautiful pub looking out over the lawn.
