Biking & hiking in the Kamloops grasslands

Often overlooked, the friendly interior city of Kamloops is one of British Columbia's top spots for weekend adventure sports. The settlement is located at the junction of two rivers and offers a smorgasbord of outdoor delights from skiing in the nearby Sun Peaks Resort, mountain biking, fishing and hiking.


Soaring sage desert grasslands and historic railroads frame the town and produce a 'wild west' backdrop for epic sunset photos. It is a unique landscape I found to be unlike anywhere else in the province with craggy hills contrasting starkly against the blue sky. There are over a hundred kilometres of nearby downhill and cross country bicycle trails and hikes which can be explored on foot. A highly recommended one hour hike to the Battle Bluffs can be accessed by a short section of unsealed road here. Plenty of wildlife and spring flowers can be seen nearby including cougars!


The town is very welcoming to travellers and you will find a range of places to eat which are reflective of the rich cultural diversity of the region. The city is known for tournaments and is the gateway to many other travel opportunities, an excellent place to base yourself for a weekend away. The local population seem to be particularly happy and many of the houses in town seem to have fantastic views. To get a good sense of the topography grab a psychedelic coloured ice cream from Scoopz and stroll along the peaceful Riverside Park.
