Neighbourhoods - Where to Live

It can be tough finding information on all the neighbourhoods across the greater metropolitan region of Vancouver. This is my best shot at a summary, although spaces change regularly as the city evolves.

Suits: corporate singles, partying on Granville St

Downtown Core

Area around the City Centre skytrain station has an abundance of shopping and high-end retail and entertainment. Easy access to offices and to major transport routes.

Suits: settled couples, short term work assignments

Coal Harbour

Glassy apartment towers with epic views across to the local mountains. Quiet, manicured streets with delightful waterfront walkways. Close to the convention centre, convenience stores, Canada Place and seaplane terminal.

Canary Warf

Suits: hipsters, city explorers, all-day diners

Mount Pleasant & Commercial Drive

Diverse populations, unique local businesses and plenty of bars and dining opportunities. Super accessible on the skytrain. Farmers markets and chilled vibes at Trout Lake during the summer.

Richmond

Close to the airport the city of Richmond is a self-contained suburban area with excellent Asian food to serve the large migrant population here. Excellent seasonal night markets and easy casino access.

Port Moody

Burgeoning Port Moody is becoming a hot spot for local families seeking more room with beautiful ocean vistas. A thriving local business community with breweries galore. Commute via train or car.

Yaletown

Gentrified industrial warehouses and glistening condominiums adorn a streetscape of gastropubs, boutiques, juicebars and groomed dogs.

Suits: trendsetters seeking intensity and urban chic

Gastown

Historical old town with narrow cobblestone streets, farm-to-table dining and boutique fitness studios. Gastown has all the inner-city sights and sounds but none of the parking! Very walkable with good late night options close to China Town.

The East Vilage

Recently renamed and undergoing massive urban renewal East Vancouver is a 'local-feel' community in transition. Gorgeous local streets sharply contrast light industrial areas. Easy access to Seymour Mountain and the local PNE amusement park. Image Kudos

Suits: budget conscious families

Surrey

Booming Eastern city with a growing population connected via skytrain. Large Asian subcontinental population with excellent local food offerings. More affordable and easy access to the Fraser Valley. Image kudos.

North Vancouver

Connected by ferry to downtown North Vancouver is a quiet suburb with great amenity at the base of three ski mountains. Easy access to hiking, kayaking in Deep Cove and nearby shopping. A large Iranian population with great food. Image kudos.

The West End

Beautifully quiet tree-lined street only a stone's throw away from downtown and surrounded by ocean on three sides. Close to Davie St (entertrainment) and Robson/Denman St dining. English Bay swimming beaches. Older accommodation, eclectic feel.

Suits: lifestyle seekers, pet owners, beach goers

Kitsilano & Jericho

Home of Lululemon, beach volleyball, sunset rollerblading, green parks and a huge outdoor pool. 'Kits' is an idyllic enclave only a few minutes from downtown with a nearby strip on South Granville St. Superficial at times and car-oriented.

Burnaby

The 'Second City' in Vancouver's metropolitan region. Burnaby is open for business with a huge mall 'Metrotown', university campus, movie studios, deer lake park and a local mountain. Image kudos.

Langley

Historic birthplace of BC with an old fort and relaxed semi-rural lifestyle. Easy access to the Abbotsford farming hinterland and Vancouver's low cost carrier airport. Good walks in the Campbell Valley. Image kudos.

West Vancouver

Oh la la, very pricey and very beautiful. Connected by the infamous green Lion's Gate Bridge this exclusive suburb has unparalleled access to yachting, hiking and snow sports. Easy Whistler and Squamish access.
